What you are discussing is not quite as black and white as you perceive.
Your mail to me seems to infer you know and we do not or you are aware
and we are not. This is very simplistic and unhelpful.

This type of marketing work is an ongoing work in progress.

We have been in business for many years now and nearly all IT,
Engineering, Research, Medical, Education, Distributors, Integrators,
Manufacturers based companies have been talked to in that time. We have
relationships with all most all sectors of business in NZ.

We have a database of tens of thousands of companies/individuals, that
we do have clearance from, to email to. We have over the last 4 years
sort clearance from these companies/individuals, spending thousands of
dollars in marketing work to obtain this. Each month we devote hundreds
of hours to this work.

A complaint from an isolated individual in a company, does not warrant
the label - SPAM, it may be that we were given that address/name from a
phone call to an officer in that company, that we approached. You do
not know the circumstances and often they do not know themselves.

If we were mass marketing material rather than endeavouring to form long
term business relationships, I would agree with you.

All our mail is open, clear and with no hidden agendas or addresses etc.

We have a multi leveled marketing campaign, phone, web, email plus a
world wide email newsletter.

Last point Graig, we have a competition running at the moment where we
ask our newsletter readers to introduce us to a friend or a colleague,
providing an email so they can receive our technical newsletter, getting
their clearance first to do this. This may be the source of this
story??

We are a reputable company.

Our policy with email has evolved over many years, going back to 1996-7
and as events, laws, perceptions etc change we change. Our onward going
policy in our marketing dept, is to get clearance before emailing.
